Spoiler Alert! Don’t read this post if you don’t want anything revealed about book 1 (Timekey of the Anasazi). Although I’m not giving away anything huge here, there are some spoilers that might lessen the fun of reading about what happens to Eliot Reed first.

Ah, so you’ve already read it? Congrats, then. And thank you!

You sure you’re ready for a sneak peak into the next book? Then read on!

Book 2 takes place a few months after the end of book 1. By this time, Eliot Reed has fully immersed himself in his new role as a Novice Time Guardian. On his first official visit to another colony, Eliot’s mentor, Duhr, transports them to the kingdom of the ancient Maya in the jungles of Central America.

The visit starts off with a hair-raising ritual: Eliot actually watches first-hand as a young Mayan king performs a blood sacrifice ceremony—beating heart ripped from chest and all. But the trip isn’t about the gore. Eliot has to learn to not jump to conclusions too quickly: appreciating other people and cultures is a critical skill for time guardians, even when they don’t understand or necessarily agree with a practice. What’s even worse is Allie has been invited to come along as Eliot’s “cultural tutor,” which seems to mean she gets to nag at him every minute.

Eliot soon realizes that a real jungle is not his kind of place. Oppressive humidity, never-ending insect bites, poisonous creatures, and a heavy, ominous feeling in the thick air make him think that the jungle is out to get him.

And he’s not totally wrong. What began as an educational trip soon becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Someone—or something—wants Eliot dead. As Eliot and his friends try to catch the perpetrator, they uncover a dark force that threatens to destroy the entire Mayan race.
